New Thoughts on Flipping the Classroom

As I shared in class, I think that flipping the classroom would provide my students with more time to practice applying strategies in speaking.  Right now I include four mini speeches throughout the semester, but those only account for four days.  Additional, varied low stakes speaking opportunities in class could help them feel better prepared.

Crystal also had a great idea about only flipping the classroom for certain topics and using a more traditional class setting for other topics.  I think this would also be useful, especially when I start the semester with skills that everyone's going to need throughout the rest of the semester (like outlining and organization).  For these first few weeks it would be helpful to use a traditional classroom setting to ensure that everyone understood these foundational chapters and skills within them.

  1. You make an interesting point about wanting to do traditional lecture for the first few weeks to make sure that students understand the material. Do you think that there are some concepts that could not be taught via this method or could that statement be the result of our own biases toward traditional methods?
